Ferdinand De Saussure and Roland Barthes

A sign can be a physical form to which we give a meaning

Ferdinand De Saussures, a theorist about signifiers suggested that 'no word has a meaning, it's your own interpetatition'

'What does the sign say? - it says nothing it needs to be read' is also a quote which Ferdinand said

Signifiers
The physical form which we can see it hear
e.g. Words, diagrams, pictures, musical

Signified
The meaning which we attach to the signifiers
e.g. Leaner driver, symbol, danger

Roland Barthes added to Ferdinands ideas and labelled them a 'symbolic code'.

These are the:

- Gesture
- Weather
- Lighting
- Setting
